Shingles, unlike flat roofs, need special clear glaze waterproof sealants to properly protect the shape and angles of roof shingles. Luckily, if only a few shingles are tearing or showing signs of cracking you don’t have to replace the entire roof.
Repairing a shingled roof is not hard to do and with a sturdy putty knife, the right waterproof sealant and a few minutes to spare, depending on the size of the damaged area, you can have damaged shingles repaired and up to the task of protecting your roof from high wind, intense rain and constant UV sunlight.
Pick a warm, dry day for any roof repair and make sure you have someone nearby in case of an accident or fall. Never try outdoor roof repairs alone. Survey the roof shingles and look for common damage such as tears, cracks, warped shingles that curl up and dark smudges.
You may have spare shingles in the garage from a previous roofing job but if you don’t go to any home center with a sample from your roof and match it up as closely as possible to the color and texture of your shingle. You won’t always be able to find an exact match but close enough will do the job.
When you have the right shingles choose a high quality roofing sealant that is waterproof and durable. You may want a sealant to coat underneath shingles and a clear glaze coating sealant to apply to the surface of the shingle. When the shingles are dry and you have removed any debris with a light brush apply a thick coat of sealant underneath shingles that are curling up. Press down and make sure the shingle sticks to the sealant.
Apply a second coat of sealant over the surface. This is what is referred to as the shingle refinishing sealer and should be a clear, glaze coating that will dry quickly and last through heavy rain and snow storms.
A simple trick to covering up a shingle roofing repair job is to collect shingle residue from the gutter and sprinkle it over the finish to camouflage the new shine. The debris will match the original shingle color and make any new color blend in better so it isn’t obvious that a few shingles were repaired.

The roof may look fine from where you stand. But the leaks tell you differently. Someone will need to look at things more closely. That means getting up on the roof.
When you are inspecting the roof
You will need a sturdy ladder for your inspection. Please understand and follow proper ladder safety procedures at all times. When you place the ladder up to the house, be careful. You do not want to damage your guttering. In some cases, like manufactured homes, there may be no guttering. However, there will be drip edge to be concerned with.
Be careful when climbing onto the rooftop. While you are there, take the time to inspect carefully. Look for broken or missing shingles. Sometimes there will be missing shingle tabs. Look at all of the drain pipes and vents. Check to make sure the seals are not cracked or missing. This will give you a good idea as to what you will need to do.

You want to make sure that no more water leaks into the house. Sometimes a can of roofing tar will do the job. Some roofing tar will work on wet surfaces. Some is designed for emergency repairs. However, you may need a tarp if the problem area is large. If you go to your local home improvement store, you should find tarps that you need. They are relatively inexpensive and can be found at other retail sites, also.
Will you need a small or large tarp? Your repairs needed, will determine its size. You will need to make sure that your tarp is secured to your roof. Elastic tie downs or rope may work. But you might have to use something like cap nails. You can also nail strips of wood to your tarp. If you are uncertain as to the tarp install, ask someone at a home improvement store. You can also do an online search to turn up information. When installing the tarp, make sure that it runs all the way to the top of the roof. It should also lap over the top. This will insure that water cannot run under the tarp and into the house. It is always easier and safer if someone is helping you with the tarp install.
